Hansel and Gretel (2018) │ Silhouette Backdrop The backdrop is sewn from three bands of shirting, in order to have the bright white/ black contrast. This would have meant that the age-old technique of using warm water to tighten the fabric would have had the opposite effect, and we therefore took extra precaution in the layout to make sure our two seams were running parallel to each other and perpendicular to the painted line representing the ground. The outer edges were neatly sewn after painting. Using shirting also meant that we didn’t prime the drop to avoid yellowing. I had some methocel on stand-by in case the Haussman Artist Design (which is essentially the same as Rosco) deep black paint had a bleeding effect, although in the end we didn’t need to water it down so much for the right viscosity and it was a non-issue. The angle of the set was 70 degrees. The rendering had each board at 1 meter in length and 20 centimeters in width which I quickly realized is mathematically impossible. A quick alteration to the length and many snapped chalk lines later got us where we needed to go.
